Description

Kirby School students, 1929-1930 school year.

Organized prior to October 1876, the Kirby School is located on land donated by Richard Kirby. The original schoolhouse burned down in 1890, and a new school building was built by October of that year. That schoolhouse burned down on February 7, 1895, and was rebuilt again by the Fall of 1895.

The schoolhouse was located on the southwest corner of Kirby Rd. and Coulters Mill Road. During district consolidations in 1948, Kirby School became part of the Argenta-Oreana Community Unit. The schoolhouse was sold in 1949 for $875 and became a private residence until about 2020 when it was torn down.
