Maroa (Ill.)

Description

A souvenir from the American School, 1903-04, which contains a photograph of teacher, Bertha Ritchie.

The Amerian School, built in 1874, was located three miles east of Maroa. The school was consolidated into the Maroa-Forsyth School District in 1948 and closed after the 1950-1951 school year. In 1952, the schoolhouse was sold and moved a quarter of a mile to be used as a farm toolshed.

The caption from the Prairie Post newspaper clipping reads "Courtesy of Mrs. George Stormer.

A photograph of the late Mrs. Bertha Funk of Maroa is on one of the souvenirs she gave her pupils about 65 years ago.

American School was three miles east of Maroa. The one-room building had one teacher who taught grades one through ten.

One redeeming feature of the system was that younger children learned much from listening to class recitations of the more advanced students."
